Dr. Sweeney is
the Medical Director of Radiation
Oncology at Resurrection Medical
Center and the Illinois Gamma Knife Center.
He is board-certified
in Radiation Oncology. After
completing residency at Ohio
State University and an American
Cancer Society Fellowship at
the University of Chicago, he
was an Assistant Professor for
the Department of Radiation
and Cellular Oncology in the
University of Chicago Center
for Radiation Therapy for 5
years. He has been in private
practice with Radiation Oncology
Consultants, Ltd. since 1998.
Dr. Sweeney has expertise in
brain tumors, sarcomas, and
prostate cancers. He is experienced
in the use of conformal 3-D
therapy, intensity modulated
radiation therapy (IMRT), stereotactic
radiosurgery using Gamma Knife, and high dose
rate brachytherapy. He is also
knowledgeable in breast, lung,
head & neck, gastrointestinal,
and gynecologic malignancies.
Dr. Sweeney participates in
Sarcoma Conferences regularly,
and is an active member in numerous
professional organizations.
He has written numerous papers,
and given local and national
lectures on various cancer topics.
Dr. Sweeney spends his leisure
time with his wife and four
children. He is an avid reader
and Notre Dame sports fan.
When asked why he chose Radiation
Oncology he states, "I find
a great deal of fulfillment
in the care of oncology patients
and their families. I enjoy
the ability that we now have
to integrate cutting-edge technologies
into the treatment of tumors.
This has clearly helped our
patients live longer and with
a better quality of life."
