The CDH Proton Center, A ProCure Center, is the first proton therapy center in Illinois to bring proton therapy to patients with cancer. The center is equipped with the most advanced proton therapy technology available, and clinical care is provided by radiation oncologists of ROC and a dedicated medical team.
Proton therapy is a powerful treatment for cancer and a highly effective alternative to X-ray radiation therapy. With proton therapy, less healthy tissue is exposed to radiation often resulting in fewer short- and long-term side effects compared with standard X-ray radiation therapy. Studies have shown proton therapy to be effective in treating many types of tumors, including tumors of the prostate, brain, head and neck, central nervous system, lung, and gastrointestinal system. It is also the preferred option for treating children with cancer because protons can be controlled precisely so there is less radiation of normal tissues, helping prevent serious complications and lessening the chance of secondary tumors.
